Did you know that most people will need to have their wisdom teeth removed? According to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, up to 80 percent of people will undergo wisdom teeth removal at some point in their lives. So why is this the case? Wisdom teeth removal can solve a wide range of issues such as overcrowding teeth, pain, and soft-tissue problems being among the most common. At Sycamore Dental in Fort Worth, TX, Dr. Suri is experienced and trained in the extraction of wisdom teeth. Below, weāll look at the step by step process from consultation to healing.
Just like all other dental procedures, the first step in wisdom tooth extraction is the comprehensive consultation. You may be wondering, āHow do I know if I need a wisdom tooth consultation?ā The short answer is, you may not know. In many cases, weāll notice the impending need for removal during a routine exam and cleaning. In other cases, patients may experience symptoms such sensitivity and pain, gun inflammation, sinus problems, mouth cysts, or shifting teeth.
During the consultation, weāll perform a thorough physical examination along with a medical history and panoramic x-rays. This is done so we can have a complete visual of the location of the wisdom teeth in relation to the nerves and sinuses. Weāll also discuss what to expect during and after the procedure, options for sedation, and answer any questions that you may have.
Wisdom teeth removal is a common outpatient procedure that is planned out well in advance. You will come in for the procedure and leave the office the same day. Still, many patients may be nervous and wish to explore sedation options. In addition to using local anesthetic to completely numb the area, we also offer nitrous oxide sedation. Commonly referred to as laughing gas, nitrous oxide will give you a euphoric feeling to allow you to relax during the removal procedure. Following the extraction, the effects of the nitrous oxide wear off almost immediately.
Dr. Suri will begin the procedure by making an incision in the gum tissue either around or directly on top of the wisdom tooth to allow complete access of the tooth for removal.
Once Dr. Suri has access to the tooth, a surgical tool is used to gently loosen the tooth within the socket. At the same time, the tooth may also be cut into sections, allowing it to be removed more easily.
Once the tooth is loose and ready to be removed, we can use special dental tools to remove it from the socket. Afterward, weāll use dissolvable sutures to close-up the site. Gauze will be placed over the extraction site to minimize bleeding and promote clotting.
Following wisdom tooth removal, youāll want to plan on relaxing for the remainder of the day. Weāll provide a detailed list of instructions to help with healing and prevent complications including what to expect in terms of healing, swelling, and pain management as well as what you should eat and drink. Youāll want to avoid any strenuous activity for several days to prevent dislodging blood clots and cause dry socket.
